Week 2: Boxing and Business [Road to Haymakers4Hope charity boxing match]
To my inner corner,
Hello. We have reached week 2 of training… aka the part of the training where I am sore… just perpetually. The part of training where everything hurts. Even muscles I didn’t even know I have. For example the muscle on the left side of my forearm that twists….
We are breaking down and building me back up. We needed to unlearn everything I’ve accumulated in terms of bad habits in the commercial cardio boxing classes, and start from the beginning. Which means: footwork and defense. [Building the right foundations on footwork with Coach Rob Ovalle]
We spent 2 hours just learning the fundamentals of footwork, how to stand with left foot in front, right foot in the back. Coach used an elastic band to make sure I don’t cross my feet. We just walked backwards and forwards repeatedly.
“In the beginning, we’re just going to do the boring exercises. On repeat.”
It reminded me of setting up a business. A lot of times, in the beginning, it’s just about the fundamentals. Sure I wanted to skip to the fancy combos and look cool, but unless I get my footwork down, I can easily lose my balance and fall.
We then worked on defense. Parries, blocks, slips. Left, right. Block. Block. Block. Constant punches flying into the face. I think in any early ventures, in the beginning it is just about survival. Defense and stay afloat. On Saturday, coach pushed me into the deep end into sparring, just to see if I float. I did float and held my own. It’s just funny how you can learn all of the skills in practice, and the moment you get hit in the face, you forget everything.
Fundraising has been going well, have raised $4,000 so far out of $10,000 but also a long way to go. I want to donate to a cancer research charity to promote innovation of science during this time, so will start doing some real research on my own on how I can maximize the ROI. Someone suggested a cancer therapeutics hackathon and I kind of liked that. Supporters, please help me get to $5000, any bit helps and is appreciated.
Thank you for the supporters so far: I never forget the people that was part of my struggles in my journey <3
